Professor of Egyptology, Cairo University, President, International Association of Egyptologists and Former General Supervisor, Grand Egyptian Museum

Prof. Dr. Tarek Tawfik is a Professor of Ancient Egyptian Archaeology at the Faculty of Archaeology, Cairo University, and holds the distinction of being the first Egyptian elected by direct international ballot as President of the International Association of Egyptologists (IAE). He served as General Supervisor of the Grand Egyptian Museum project from 2014, overseeing a critical phase that included the transfer of over 45,000 artefacts and the redesign of the museum's façade to reduce costs while enhancing structural integrity. His tenure was marked by mobilising thousands of Egyptian conservators, engineers, and specialists, and forging the partnership with Japan that secured $450 million in project funding. He has described the Grand Egyptian Museum as a transformational event that will reshape the study of Egyptology for the next 30 years.
